Skopje Airport (SKP) Pickup: 5-minute guide

Skopje International Airport (SKP) is small — one terminal, two baggage belts, three rental counters. This makes it one of the easiest airports in Europe to pick up a rental car. From the moment the wheels touch the runway until driving out of the parking gate, it's usually under 25 minutes if you've booked in advance. Here's exactly what happens and how to skip the things that slow people down.

Before Landing

Two things to do on the plane:

• •**Keep your reservation number visible** (mkrent.mk sends it as `MK-XXXXXXX`). The partner agent searches for it; without it, they have to search by name and phone, which adds 5 minutes.
• •**Prepare your driver's license and passport in the same pocket.** EU/UK/USA driver's licenses are accepted directly. Other driver's licenses require an International Driving Permit (IDP) — prepare it in your home country before the flight; SKP cannot issue it.

If the flight is delayed by more than 30 minutes, send a quick WhatsApp to the partner number in the booking confirmation. They will reorganize the agent's shift. mkrent.mk automatically sends delay notifications if you've added the flight number, but a human message doesn't hurt.

Inside the Terminal

After landing, you descend from air stairs (no jet bridge — Skopje is small) and walk into a single corridor. Passport control: 2 counters for non-Schengen, 1 for Schengen and Macedonian residents. Outside peak season (June 15 – Sept 10), the queue is under 5 minutes; at peak, it can reach 25.

Baggage claim is immediately after that. Both belts serve all flights; check the screen for your flight. Average wait: 15 minutes from landing.

Where is the Rental Agent

Pass through Customs (no declaration if you have nothing to declare) and exit into the Grand Hall. **Look immediately to your right** for the row of rental counters: Avis, Sixt, Europcar, and the Mkrent partner counter (a white sign with a golden "M"). You will also see a person holding a **sign with your name** — that's the agent's job. They have been tracking your flight on FlightRadar.

If you don't see your name immediately, walk slowly past the row of agents with signs. They speak English; just say "Mkrent". The agent checks the reservation number, ID, and driver's license — usually 90 seconds.

At Gate B (Pickup)

Cars are parked in the airport parking lot, not at the terminal curb. The agent leads you outside — exit through the terminal door, turn left, walk 80 meters along the covered pedestrian path. **Gate B** is marked "Rent-a-Car / Авто-изнајмување". Cars are in the first three rows.

A walk-around inspection of the car takes 4-7 minutes:

• •Existing scratches and dents are marked on a diagram (you sign one copy)
• •Take your own photos of each panel, including the roof and interior doors — a phone camera is fine
• •Confirm that the fuel level on the dashboard matches the agreement (usually full or 3/4)

The agent gives you the keys, a copy of the agreement, and a partner business card with their direct number for the duration of the rental.

Exiting SKP

Drive to the parking gate. **The first 20 minutes are free** — for arrivals, that's enough for documents and walking to the car. After 20 minutes, the tariff is 50 MKD (€0.80) per hour. Insert the parking ticket from the agent; the gate opens.

Exit the airport onto **highway A1 north** towards Skopje city center (15 km, 18 min, no toll). The speed limit on the airport access road is 80 km/h until the highway, then 130 km/h. Macedonia drives on the right; signs are bilingual Macedonian (Cyrillic) + Latin.

4 Time-Consuming Mistakes

1. **Not having the reservation number handy.** Open the email at the gate, not at the counter.

2. **Forgetting that driver's license + passport are needed for pickup.** Some renters only bring a driver's license and then wait for additional verification.

3. **Skipping the inspection.** Without your own photos, you have no defense if the partner claims you caused a scratch.

4. **Using an airport ATM for the security deposit.** It works, but exchange rates are bad. Use a credit card from home — the security deposit is €500-€1,500 depending on the class.

What to do if it's the Middle of the Night
