If you're planning your first rental in Macedonia, this guide gives you the shortcuts a local would — what to book, where to park, when to leave, and the one restaurant halfway that everyone talks about.

Section 1 · Plan your route

The first mistake foreign drivers make is trusting Google Maps for Macedonia's back roads. Some of the most scenic routes here are unpaved for a few kilometers, and regular sedans can struggle in early spring. An SUV adds around €8–15/day to your rental but saves you a tow truck bill and a ruined afternoon.

Section 2 · When to go

Peak season is June 15 – September 10. Rental prices climb 30–50% and partner fleets sell out 2 weeks ahead. The sweet spots are late May and the full month of September — same 25°C afternoons, half the crowd. Winter (November – March) rewards the patient with fog-to-sunshine drives across Galichica, but check the tire rules.

Section 3 · Booking checklist

Passport + driving license (IDP recommended for non-EU), credit card with €500 hold capacity, and a phone plan or local eSIM — Macedonian 4G coverage is excellent everywhere south of Veles. Collision waiver is optional but recommended; if you skip it, the deductible is €500–€1,500 depending on vehicle class.
