SKP Airport Car Pickup: 5-Minute Guide

What happens between landing at SKP and departure — signage location, key handover at Gate B, 20 minutes of free parking time, and what to do if your flight is delayed.

Skopje International Airport (SKP) is small — one terminal, two baggage carousels, three rental desks. This makes it one of the easiest airports in Europe to pick up a car. From the moment the wheels touch down on the runway to exiting the parking gate, it generally takes less than 25 minutes if you've pre-booked. Here's exactly what happens and how to avoid things that slow people down.

Before landing

Two things to do on the plane:

  • **Keep your reservation number ready** (mkrent.mk emails it as `MK-XXXXXXX`). The partner agent calls; calling with just a name and phone number without the reservation number adds 5 minutes.
  • **Have your driver's license and passport ready in the same pocket.** EU/UK/US licenses are directly accepted. Other licenses require an International Driving Permit (IDP) — get this in your home country before your flight; SKP cannot issue it.

If your flight is delayed by more than 30 minutes, send a quick WhatsApp to the partner number on your reservation confirmation. Agents rearrange their schedule. mkrent.mk also sends automatic delay notifications if you've added your flight number, but a human notification doesn't hurt.

Inside the terminal

After landing, you disembark via the aircraft stairs (no jet bridge — Skopje is small) and enter through a single corridor. Passport control: 2 booths for non-Schengen, 1 for Schengen and Macedonian residents. Outside of high season (June 15 – September 10), the queue is under 5 minutes; at peak, it can go up to 25. The baggage hall is right after. Two belts serve all flights; look at the screen above for your flight number. Average wait: 15 min from landing.

Where is the rental agent

Pass through customs (the "nothing to declare" lane if you genuinely have nothing to declare) and exit into the Arrivals Hall. **Look immediately to your right**: a row of rental companies — Avis, Sixt, Europcar, and the Mkrent partner desk (white sign, golden "M"). You will also see **someone holding a sign with your name on it** — this is your agent's duty. They will have tracked your flight on FlightRadar. If you don't see your name immediately, walk slowly past the agents holding signs. They speak English; just say "Mkrent". The agent will check your reservation number, ID, and driver's license — usually 90 seconds.

At Gate B (pickup)

Cars are in the airport parking lot, not on the terminal curb. The agent will lead you out — exit the terminal door, turn left, walk 80 meters along the covered walkway. **Gate B** is marked with a "Rent-a-Car / Авто-изнајмување" sign. Cars are parked in the first three rows. The perimeter check takes 4-7 minutes:

  • Existing scratches and dents are noted on a paper diagram (you sign a copy)
  • Take your own photos of every panel, including the roof and inside doors — a phone camera is sufficient
  • Confirm the fuel level on the dashboard matches the contract (usually full or 3/4)
  • Make sure the spare tire, jack, and warning triangle are in place
  • Test the air conditioning and headlights before driving off.

The agent will give you the keys, a copy of the contract, and a partner business card with their direct number for the duration of the rental.

Exiting SKP

Approach the parking gate. **The first 20 minutes are free** — more than enough for arrivals paperwork and walking to the car. After 20 minutes, the hourly rate is 50 MKD (€0.80). Insert the parking ticket given by the agent, and the gate will open. For Skopje city center, exit the airport via **A1 highway northbound** (15 km, 18 min, free). The speed limit on the airport access road is 80 km/h, and on the highway, it's 130 km/h. Traffic in Macedonia is on the right; signs are bilingual Macedonian (Cyrillic) + Latin.

4 time-consuming mistakes

1. **Not having your reservation number ready.** Open your email at the gate, not at the desk.

2. **Forgetting that both driver's license + passport are required for pickup.** Some renters only bring a driver's license and expect the partner to verify identity another way.

3. **Skipping the perimeter check.** Without your own photos, you have no defense against a scratch the partner claims you made.

4. **Trying to use the airport ATM for the deposit block.** It works, but the exchange rates are bad. Use a credit card from your home country — a block of €500-€1,500 will be placed depending on the car class.

What to do if it's the middle of the night

SKP has flights landing until 02:00. Mkrent partners cover all flights — you don't pay extra for out-of-hours pickup as long as you've booked through the platform. The partner agent waits in the same desk row. If coffee is needed during paperwork, the terminal cafe is open 24/7.

[Browse cars in Skopje](/cars) or [book an airport transfer](/transfer) if you want to skip driving entirely.

The entire pickup process is designed to take 25 minutes from gate to highway. Variables are passport queue (high season), baggage wait, and how carefully you do the perimeter check. If your hotel check-in is tight, plan 30-40 minutes buffer time after landing.
