Riviera of the Balkans

From Skopje: 280 km · 3h

Albania

Albania opened to tourism late — and that's its superpower. Pristine Ionian coast cheaper than Croatia, UNESCO Ottoman towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, Tirana's pastel brutalism. 3h from Skopje, you're in a different Mediterranean: Ali Pasha's castle, byrek for €1, and coves still off-grid.

Ksamil is what Maldives would look like if it cost €40/night. Crystal water, white sand islands you swim to, grilled octopus €6.

Driving tips

Know before you go

Local quirks, borders, fuel and road conditions.

01

Roads dramatically improved in last 5 years. Main routes (SH1, SH4, SH8) are 2-3 lane highways now.

02

Mountain roads (Korçë, Theth) still narrow; expect shepherds, rockfall, goats. 4WD recommended above 1,500m.

03

Gas stations every 20 km on main roads; accept cards. Rural: carry cash.

04

Police: many speed cameras. Respect 80 km/h on highways, 40 in villages.
